Series-

a group or a number of related or similar things, events, etc., arranged or occurring in temporal, spatial, or other order or succession.

Sequence-

the following of one thing after another; succession.

Sign-

Three subcategories of icon: image, metaphor and diagram. Images share "simple qualities" or "sensory qualities". Diagrams and their objects share relations or structures: a subway map is diagram of the actual subway, and the aforementioned equation is a diagram of mathematic relations. Diagrams have a degree of arbitrariness, as I can express the same relation in a number of ways: [family(parents, children)] or family=parents+children. For Peirce, metaphors "represent the representative character of an object by representing a parallelism in something else" (Johansen 2002, 40). While symbols required interpreters and indices required their objects, icons have no such requirements.

Example-

Index-

Defined by some sensory feature A (something directly visible, audible etc) that correlates with and thus implies of points to B.

Peirce outlined three types of index: tracks, symptoms, and designations (Johansen 2002, 32). Tracks often have a physical, cause & effect relationship, but are not simultaneous with their object. Symptoms are simultaneous with their object, and distinguishing between symptom and object may be impossible. Designations point or signify while being distinct from their object: proper names, a pointed finger, and the word 'this' are all designations (Peirce 109).

Example-This flame could represent darkness, solitude etc.

Symbol-

Symbols are arbitrary and unmotivated, reliant on conventional usage to determine meaning. Unlike icons the symbols are not signs without an interpreter or "reader." signs, the symbol/index/icon triad focuses on the relations of signs to their objects: symbols have a convention-based relationships with their objects (e.g. alphanumeric symbols); indexes are directly influenced by their objects (e.g. a weathervane or a thermometer); and icons have specific properties in common with their objects (e.g. portraits, diagrams) (Johansen 2002, 51). Directly and physically influenced by its object, and is therefore an index; and lastly it requires a learned process of "reading" to understand it, and is therefore a symbol. The symbol/index/icon triad applies equally to any and all media or form of communication, preferring none over another.

What makes a successful book-jacket?

I think a successful book-jacket is one that has all or one of these: juxtaposition, interesting type, a balance of complexity and simplicity, and something intriguing or unexpected that makes the viewer pick it up.

I like the typeface here and the optical illusion kind of thing that draws focus to the title.

I love how this cover incorporates the text into the motion of the graphics.

This cover shows successful photography that leads to the viewer asking "what is going on in that picture"

The use of multiple photographs in a collage format reveals more of the story inside. Revealing more information is sometimes the best way to interest the viewer.

I like how this cover focuses on simple typography. It is clear and to the point.

The Lineage of Grace Series (1,2,3)

Five women whom God chose. Each was faced with extraordinary—even scandalous—challenges. Each took great personal risk to fulfill her calling. Each was destined to play a key role in the lineage of Jesus Christ, the savior of the world. With her hallmark touches of brilliant prose and gripping characterizations, Francine Rivers tells these women’s stories in a way you’ve never heard before. Remaining true to the facts given in scripture, she brings these long-ago women to life and lets them speak to us in new and life-changing ways.

Unveiled: Tamar- Genesis 37:1-38:6. Seek and Find

In Unveiled you will meet Tamar. Who risked her life to be the woman she was called to be. Learn along with her the overwhelming truth that God uses our circumstances and out steps toward him, however faltering, to fulfill his plan.

Unveiled is a story of how the young woman, Tamar, raised in the pagan Canaanite beliefs came to trust in the God of her father-in-law Judah, even though Judah had wandered from his faith. through Tamar’s, determination, Judah’s line was assured and he came back to the teachings of his people. The lessons learned from Tamar and from Judah are biblical values that are as true today as when they were recorded. Tamar (means “date palm”. Date Palms were highly valued trees, not only for their fruit but also for their stately beauty and ability to thrive in the desert climate.)

We are not told, in the Bible, many things about Tamar and her life, however Unveiled is a probable account of her circumstances and how she must have felt and lived. That said, the story gave great insight into Tamar’s struggles and victory. The book is a moving account of the oppression of women at that time in history and, unfortunately, that still lives on in some countries today. Parts of Tamar’s story were disturbing but they accurately described the pagan customs and the laws that governed the Jewish people.

Unashamed- This is the story of Rahab.

Rivers’ dedication:“To women who think a past of mistakes ruins any chance of a joy-filled future. Turn to Jesus and experience the wonders He has waiting for you.”

In Unashamed, you will meet Rahab. Exploited by men who saw only her beauty, Rahab held fast to her faith in an all-powerful God. Learn along with her the overwhelming truth that God seeks and finds those whose hearts are tender toward him, no matter how far away they are.

Rehab was a prostitute, residing in Jericho who was chosen by God to be a help to His people, the Israelites. She not only believed and accepted the God of Israel as her God, but her faith was such that she trusted him to keep her and her family from harm even in the midst of all that was going on around her.

Unspoken- This is the story of Bathsheba.

Dedication: “For women who feel they’ve lost their reputation forever. God can make beauty from ashes.”

The scandalous affair of David and Bathsheba did not end in one night. Unspoken is the story of one woman’s journey from innocence to despair—and of the God to restored her. To many, her name means seduction and sin. Yet God called Bathsheba His own, worthy of the legacy of His Son.

Perhaps the most compelling installment is Unspoken, the love story of David and Bathsheba. This Old Testament saga of adultery, power, and battles fought both on the field of combat and in the human heart touches on the cost of poor choices, the need for forgiveness, and finding ultimate fulfillment--themes that are relevant today. Rivers writes poignantly of how Bathsheba falls in love with David as a little girl, and of her bitterness when she comes of age and is given in marriage to Uriah, one of David's mighty warriors. Love cannot be commanded, however, and it's not long before the sexual tension between David and Bathsheba reaches its logical conclusion, with disastrous results. Rivers adeptly brings the biblical account to life, portraying the difficult struggles of good people, the corrupting influence of power, and God's love for those who make mistakes--even big mistakes.

“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

“Father by Eastmountainsouth”

Father

I hold in my heart

This pain that I feel

A man I call father

Well, He’s almost real…

He’s almost real…

And I’m of his flesh and bone

So similar and estranged

And I was just a child

When you went away

When you went away

Away…

Away…

Away…

Father, you know…

And yet, I still hold you

Well, it’s up and to this day

Father answer my questions

‘Cause I still need you...I still need you

I am one of two

And I still need you

I am one of two

Am I...am I… like you…?

“Of all base passions, fear is most accurs’d”- Shakespeare

“Forever” by Ben Harper

Not talkin’ ‘bout a year, no not three or four

I don’t want that kind of forever anymore

Forever always seems to be around when it begins

But forever never seems to be around when it ends

(chorus)

So give me your forever

Please your forever

Not a day less will do

From you

People spend so much time, every single day

Runnin’ around all over town, givin’ their forever away

But no, not me, I won’t let my forever roam

And now I hope I can find my forever a home

(chorus)

Like a handless clock with numbers an infinite of time

No, not the forever only found in the mind

Forever always seems to be around when things begin

But forever never seems to be around when things end

(chorus)

Let us not lift our souls to another

O God let us be a generation that seeks

That seeks your face O God of Jacob

O God let us be a generation that seeks

That seeks your face O God of Jacob
